The last 5 days can only be summed up as crazy. Crew Chief Tommy Ridgeway and myself spent nearly every waking moment preparing the car for this Endurance test. And finally on Friday night we had the M5 on the ground and loaded up in the Hard Motorsport Trailer and we were on the road headed for Shelton, Washington.
Getting to The Ridge would not have been possible if it wasn’t for Hank, Dave, Rich and John at Advanced Auto Fabrication, Adam Harding from Hard Motorsport, Jared Correia of NW Autoworks, and Northwest BMW Club Members Jake Dunkin and Bryan Corder. And all of the upgrades for this race would not have possible if not for contributions from sponsors DataPro Solutions, Gary Stenzel of Spokane Family Law, Gareth Campbell of Garth Vader Motorsports and Jamie and Raza from RK AutoWerks. Thank you everybody!
Going into this race we only had 3 goals; Have fun, shake down the M5 for the ICSCC Season and finish. We accomplished 2 out of 3. An o-ring problem on the coolant manifolds plagued us all weekend and ultimately forced us to retire halfway into the race. The team did an amazing job on Saturday taking apart the intake plenums and thermostat housing to put in a make shift repair as we didn’t have the correct o-rings for the job. As racing goes, it’s always the small stuff and the fix didn’t last as we had hoped.
Before retiring, we were running 5th in class despite having missed qualifying on Saturday and starting from the back of the grid. Anthony Kalcounis drove an amazing first two hours and handed it off to myself (James Haile) right around the 2 hour mark. I had to bring it in after 50 minutes because I noticed the coolant tempature rising quickly. The leak from hell had returned and after pulling it around the wall and locating the leak, Tommy and myself decided not to risk the S62 and retire from the race 3 hours in.
We missed our last goal of finishing but the weekend was overall a great success. The team worked great together and I could not ask for more from the Hard Motorsport Racing Team. The pit stops went great and most importantly we all had a ton of fun and got to see our West Side racing family including Scott and Cam Norton.
